The Flathead Valley is a great winter destination for family travel. Whitefish, Montana is ideally located to access the Big Mountain Ski Resort, Glacier National Park, and the numerous lakes in the region including Flathead Lake. Kids are naturals at almost any sport they try, skiing is no exception. Their bodies are limber and the fear factor is really not an issue. They are in the moment, enjoying whatever it is they are doing because their main objective is to have fun. So give them things to do that will bring laughter and big smiles to their faces, and keep them interested in the snowy playground that winter provides.

Big Moutain Ski Resort is just a 10 minute drive from Whitefish. The aptly named mountain offers over 3,000 skiable acres with 11 lifts to access the various terrain to please any skier, novice or expert. Ski school and kids programs are offered throughout the ski season. The best part is that children under 6 years of age ski for FREE. The mountain also offers a terrain and jib park, snow tubing, horse drawn sleigh rides, 16 kilometers of cross country skiing and snowshoe trails, and night skiing. There are plenty of fun activities for children to endulge in, and they will be exhausted when it is time to call it a day.

Glacier National Park is just north of Whitefish and is a remarkable destination for family outings. A snowshoe hike would allow the entire family to access some off the beaten terrain and have a glimpse of this pristine wild environment. Naturalist guides are available in the park and offer enormous information on the history, ecology, and geology of the northwestern corner of Montana. A half day spent with a guide would be just enough time to maintain a child's interest.

The numerous lakes in the Flathead Valley are superb for ice fishing. The winter season is a great time to introduce young children to fishing for two very good reasons: it is simplistic and very effective for catching fish. Simplicity is one of ice fishing's greatest attractions, you use a spud bar or hand-powered ice auger to make a hole in the ice. After that, you need a short rod with a simple reel, some plain hooks or small jigging lures, and some bait. A bucket can carry all the gear, and also be used as a seat to fish from. Kids will easily learn the techinque of jigging and then once they catch a fish and keep catching fish they are fully content.

The Flathead Valley is a winter dream for kids wanting some action and excitement. Once you get your kids out the door and into the fun wintery playground, they will be hooked on the winter activities of the northwest region of Montana! Enjoy your next family winter vacation and keep your kids interested in the many fun activities offered.
