Whitefish Mountain Resort, previously known as Big Mountain, is one of Montana's largest ski areas. The resort boasts 3,000 skiable acres with much more acreage in the backcountry, and offers 2,500 vertical feet. Annual snowfalls of 335 inches make Whitefish Mountain Resort a great winter destination for people of all ages. Whitefish Mountain Resort's size and variety of ski terrain are what set it apart from other ski areas. Distances are vast, the ambiance is pristine, the powder is everywhere, and skiers from elsewhere forget what lift lines used to be.
This family-friendly resort offers a full service alpine village accommodating 1,600 people. The Snowsports Center offers instruction services for all sports and skill levels. Lessons are geared to sharpen the skill of all skiers and riders, regardless of age or ability. Quick tips, half day and full day lessons are available for private and group instruction for skiing, snowboarding, telemark skiing, cross country skiing, snowblading, snowshoeing, and snowcycling. Childrens programs, along with camps for all ages are also services offered at Whitefish Mountain Resort.
If the whole family isn't into skiing every day, snow tubing is a great option. Another option is to enjoy the relaxation and outdoor wonder a sleigh ride provides. Sleigh rides take you into the winter wonderland treating you with delightful scenes of the winter enchantment and the wildlife that it supports. Wildlife in the area is abundant, while the moose and elk move a bit slower conserving their energy, the winter offers a very peaceful environment to view the diverse and plentiful inhabitants of the great outdoors.
Snowmobiling is a great way to access the remote areas of the national forest. Northwest Montana's recreation wonderland boasts over 200 miles of groomed snowmobile trails with nearly 2,000 miles of forest service roads that you take you into great hill climbing, powder play areas, wildlife viewing and spectacular ridgetop views of Glacier National Park and the Canadian Rockies. There are a number of services which provide rentals and purchases of snowmobile machines and gear. Guides are available for half day, full day or multi-day trips, and packages are customized to meet each individual group's needs.
Flathead Valley not only offers 3,000 acres of skiing at the Whitefish Mountain Resort, but also miles of marked cross-country skiing trails leading into the rugged mountain vastness of Glacier National Park, ice fishing one of the numerous lakes in the region, ice skating, and dog sledding.
