Whitefish Mountain Resort, previously Big Mountain Ski Resort, is located just north of Whitefish, Montana, in the northwest corner of the state. Whitefish Mountain Resort is one of Montana's largest ski areas and is aptly named. The resort boast 3,000 skiable acres and 2,500 vertical feet.
With an annual snowfall of 335 inches, WMR is a great winter destination for all ages to enjoy this winter wonderland. From the summit of the mountain, skiers enjoy views of the peaks of Glacier National Park, the Canadian Rockies and the entire Flathead valley.
The resort is a full service alpine village accommodating 1,600 people in a beautiful setting. The friendly staff of the mountain will gladly provide any information you may need to ensure a fun and safe ski day. The ski season begins in November on Thanksgiving Day and closes sometime in April, depending on snow conditions. Whitefish Mountain offers not only alpine skiing and snowboarding, but also offers snowcat skiing, 16 kilometers of cross country skiing, snow tubing, snowshoe trails, terrain and jib parks, and night skiing. The resort operates 11 lifts providing access to over 90 trails. The lifts include 2 surface lifts, 1 double chair, 5 triple chairs, 1 quad chair, 1 gondola, and 2 high speed quads. Spanning 3,000 skiable acres, 20% is for beginners, 50% is for intermediates, and 30% is for advanced/experts only.
The ski resort is essentially divided into three parts: the front side, the back side and the Hellroaring Basin side. The front side of the ski area is where the widest variety of terrain is found on the mountain. All of the beginner trails are found on the front side of Whitefish Mountain Resort, well away from the intermediate and expert trails. The back side of Whitefish Mountain Resort seems to have the best skiing conditions, as it is north facing. The trails are all excellent and directed for intermediate and expert skiers. The Hellroaring Basin area of Whitefish Mountain Resort is the crown jewel of the ski area. It is unspoiled, undeveloped, not heavily used and provides extensive off-trail skiing among a wide variety of advanced terrain. Skiing ranges from open bowls to thick trees, and consists entirely of ungroomed trails.
From perfectly groomed runs for serious carving to off-piste terrain to keep those powder hounds and experts busy, Whitefish Mountain Resort has a wide variety of terrain for all to enjoy. More than 50 years ago, the ski pioneers of Whitefish, Montana trudged up the local hill for their winter fun. Today, high-speed quads are climbing the mountain and continuing the spirit of its exhilarating winter fun.
