History
Built in 1942 as Flathead County Airport, the airport originally had three runways, a fence, and little lighting. It wasn't until 1947 when the first terminal was built. The original terminal was constructed of wood and could accommodate 50 people. The first commercial flight landed on June 5, 1949. Indian dancers, musical bands, and an air show greeted the passengers of this first commercial flight made by Northwest Airlines.
Decades later, the airport was approved as a point of entry for international flights. The name of the airport was officially changed in 1970 to Glacier International Airport, taking advantage of its proximity to the huge tourist attraction of Glacier National Park.
It wasn't until the 1980s when Glacier International Airport received a new terminal. The 29,000 square-foot terminal was completed in 1981 and cost $3 million. The terminal was necessary as passenger boardings soared to 50,000. Today, the airport serves over 130,000 passengers.
