Glacier National Park is a fantastic spot to spend summer family vacations. If you are spending time on the road to drive here, you have the chance to pass through some of the most scenic parts of North America. Once you arrive, probably one of the first things to do is drive the Going-to-the-Sun Road. Yeah, more driving after the already long drive getting here. But it's unlike any road you have ever been on. Pass by waterfalls cascading down to the road, hanging canyons, breathtaking views at every turn, and tons of wildlife in the early morning or evening.

All this before you climb to the roads highest stop at Logan Pass along the continental divide. At the summit, it is worth spending a bit of time and especially walking the three mile loop on the Trail of Cedars to another incredible lookout. This is just an example of some of the out-of-door experiences you can find here with your family.

Glacier National Park is a perfect location for kids to begin enjoying and valuing nature and the outdoors. Stop by the Apgar Visitor Center for kid specific exhibits on geology, nature, wildlife and the park's natural history. If you have your kids with you, it's never too early to go on an all-day hiking trip or even an overnight or multi-day backpacking or horsepack trip. There are a variety of self-guided interpretive hikes that have signs posted along the way describing the natural surroundings. Check out these trails: Swiftcurrent Lake, Trail of Cedars, Huckleberry Mountain, Sun Point, and Hidden Lake. If you are looking for longer or overnight hikes, check in at a Visitor Center for suggestions on trails and difficulty levels. There are over 400 miles of trails throughout the park with some of the most popular trails in Lake McDonald, Logan Pass, Many Glacier, St. Mary, and Two Medicine areas.

There are many other activities within the park for the whole family to enjoy on summer vacations. Take a boat tour or rent a boat and go fishing. Check in with the Glacier Institute for any programs they have going on for families. Kids can also become Junior Rangers if they pick up a Junior Ranger newspaper in any one of the visitor centers. If you enjoy the outdoors, you and your family will be blown away by Glacier's vastness and serenity.
