Glacier Park is a great place for kids to appreciate and enjoy the out of doors by learning about geology, nature, glaciers, and Native Americans. The Apgar Visitor Center has a wonderful exhibit on the park designed just for kids. There are a handful of interpretive trails in the park at Huckleberry Mountain, Sun Point, Hidden Lake, Swiftcurrent Lake, and Trail of the Cedars. You will find signs and brouchures that go along with each short self guided hike. Check in at a visitor center to see when Rangers will lead certain interpretive hikes throughout the summer. The Glacier Institute is another place to check for various classes and programs that they run for the whole family. Glacier Park also has a fun Junior Ranger program. Pick up a Junior Ranger newspaper at one of the many visitor centers for more information. In the evenings during the summer months you will find scheduled campfire talks as well as Native American programs like story telling and performances.
There are so many activities that you can do as a family that you will never run out of things to do. Glacier Park Boat Company offers boat cruises, a great way to enjoy the scenery and see wildlife from afar. You can rent boats on any one of the major lakes and go fishing for trout, whitefish, and grayling. A number of horse wranglers in the park and in Flathead Valley offer short and long horseback rides on the most gentle horses they have. In Flathead Valley you will find activities like waterskiing, paddle boating, canoeing, biking, and a number of playgrounds.
A great introduction to Glacier National Park is driving the Going-to-the-Sun Road. It navigates 50 miles across the park, reaching it's highest point along the continental divide at Logan Pass. Once you reach Logan Pass you can follow a three mile roundtrip hike to a lookout that drops 400 feet down to a lake. The view is breathtaking and surely be glad that you chose Glacier Park to spend your summer vacation with the whole family.
