Big Mountain Ski Resort is positioned in the northwest corner of Montana. Just north of Whitefish, the resort is famous for snow ghosts, unsurpassed views, miles of groomed slopes, fresh powder, and an easy going environment. The full service resort caters to skiers and snowboarders of all ability levels and opens in November on Thanksgiving Day and closes sometime in April, depending on snow conditions.

The resort boast 3,000 skiable acres and 2,500 vertical feet. Annual snowfalls reach some 300 inches making this resort a perfect winter destination. The Whitefish resort is widely viewed as a natural playground suited for all abilities, especially in the snowboarding world. As the sport of snowboarding has grown in recent years, the terrain offered at ski resorts must be well suited for skiers and snowboarders alike. Big Mountain has the best for both worlds, and snowboarding is allowed on all open terrain.

Essentially, Whitefish Mountain Resort is divided into three parts: the front side, the back side, and the Hellroaring Basin side. The front side of the resort is where the widest variety of terrain is found. All of the beginner slopes are on this side, and are separated from the more advanced slopes. The back side of the resort holds the best skiing conditions, as it is north facing so the sun doesn't effect the snow quality. The trails are all excellent and for intermediate and expert skiers. The Hellroaring Basin area is the crown jewel of the resort. It is unspoiled, undeveloped, and not heavily used. This area provides great off-trail skiing among diverse advanced terrain.

Snowboarders will find Whitefish Mountain Resort's Hellroaring Basin and East Rim the best selection for steep and deep terrain. The area harbors tight chutes and cliff drops while the aptly-named Inspiration is wide open, top-to-bottom corduroy cruiser with panoramic views of Glacier Park and Flathead Valley. The North Side is home to the Whitetail Terrain Park. The terrain park features enough hits, gap jumps, berms, rails, table tops and other obstacles to keep all riders entertained, from beginner to expert snowboarders.

Lessons and rentals are available at Big Mountain Sports and the Outpost Ski Shop. The snowboarding division of Whitefish Mountain Resort's Snowsports Center boasts nationally-sponsored athletes and certified instructors who offer both private and group lessons. Rest assured, the emphasis is on fun, and what could be more fun than learning how to carve massive S-turns down the side of Big Mountain? So buckle down, suit up, head out and drop in at Whitefish Mountain Resort for a winter world of snowboarding excitement.
