Fernie Ski Resort
Fernie Alpine Ski Resort offers mountains of snow and mountains of adventure. An amazing 29 feet of natural snow blankets the ski area's impressive five alpine bowls nestled in the majestic limestone cliffs of the Lizard Range in the Rocky Mountains of British Columbia. This is the fastest growing resort in Canada, "top ten in North America', 'most improved' and 'best new lifts' are just a few of the notable awards this resort has earned. Many new tastefully appointed accommodations and year round services are now available at the resort base village, with more improvements and real estate opportunities to come over the next few years, offering the very best in mountain living. For a change of scene after a day on the slopes, the quaint town of Fernie, rich in coal mining history and turn-of-the-century architecture, is sure to please the whole family and is only minutes away from the resort.
The terrain at Fernie Alpine Resort is uniquely suited to take full advantage of the abundant snowfall that cascades over the resort every year. The craggy cleft of the Lizard Range above the ski area is often likened to an open catcher's mitt. The sheer limestone faces tower above the lifts of the ski area, trapping snow-laden storms and making Fernie a must-ski on the British Columbia's powder circuit. The ski area offers an overwhelmingly beautiful mountain, or essentially a really long ridge with many undulations so that there are steep bowls and faces everywhere. The only place to escape the steep terrain is in the beginner chair. The trail maps indicate green and blue runs, but they are steep and more advanced than the average beginner and intermediate terrain offered at other resorts.
British Columbia's Fernie Alpine Resort has long held cult status among Alberta and British Columbia skiers for its pristine, natural snow, and consistently steep slopes. Five alpine bowls, 2,500 acres, a 2,800-foot vertical drop, 106 defined trails, and ten lifts create the perfect cousin to its United States' counterpart - Big Mountain, Montana, located a short two hours drive away. Fernie offers it all for the skiing adventure: tree runs, moguls, off-piste, chutes, and less-extreme intermediate and beginner runs. But surprisingly, lift lines are usually short to nonexistent, especially mid-week.
Fernie Alpine Resort is located in the extreme South East of the Canadian province of British Columbia. It is approximately 40 miles from the Alberta and United States borders, about 100 miles south of Banff, Alberta and nearly 180 miles from Calgary, Alberta. The ski area rises about 3 miles above the town of Fernie, population of 5,000. You can see the massive bowls from Fernie's Main Street. Most visitors travel by car or bus from Calgary to the resort. The road to Fernie will lead you through some of the most spectacular mountain scenery in the world. The drive is easy with no major mountain passes and the roads are well maintained.
The best time to ski Fernie for quality conditions is December through March. Big snowstorms with overnight dumps of a foot or more are frequent for the ski hill. North-south and east-west valley systems create a percipitation trap. Fernie Alpine Ski Resort is exactly where you want to be when the skies open up and release feet of light powdery goodness. The weather forecast can assist in your planning but alot of it has to do with luck, and if you are lucky you will be treated to skiing a winter delight.
