Libby Montana

The Libby area has more than 2 million acres of public land available for outdoor recreation. The Kootenai National Forest alone provides hundreds of miles of hiking trails, as well as countless scenic spots for camping.

Libby, Montana boasts high mountain lakes, streams, and the Kootenai River. Lake Koocanusa, which is 90-miles long, is another primary attraction that boaters and lake fishermen come to experience each year.

High-peaked mountain ranges mark the territory - Snowshoe Peak in the Cabinet Mountains Wilderness reaches a height of 8,738 feet. The Whitefish Range, Purcell Mountains, Bitterroot Range, Salish Mountains, and Cabinet Mountains are all part of the rough terrain complemented by calm river valleys.

The Cabinets are where you can find many different species of wildlife, such as black and grizzly bears. In the northern part of the forest the land opens up more with rolling forested hills sitting in the sight of the Whitefish Range.

The Cabinet Mountains Wilderness area contains more than 20 trails giving access to several high mountain lakes and streams. The trails move through gorgeous forested side slopes, huckleberry patches, and alpine meadows full of fragrant wildflowers. There's also excellent hunting for deer, elk, moose, bear, and mountain sheep.

In the winter you can enjoy a small downhill ski area complete with T-bar and tons of backcountry roads perfect for snowmobiling.

Libby Dam is another great destination. Completed in 1972 as a joint venture between the United States and Canada, the dam is meant to provide protection against floods and generate hydroelectric power. Prior to the dam, the Kootenai River rose in the spring causing flooding in Montana, Idaho, and British Columbia.

The Libby Dam Visitor Center has a new exhibit area, book and gift sales area, and an auditorium featuring "The Power and Beauty of the Kootenai, the Story of Libby Dam." Guided tours occur during the summer season.

Libby, Montana has 20 access trails, high mountain lakes, it's remote and quiet, very scenic, and has beautiful wildflowers, animals, and excellent fishing.
