When entering the park, for the first time or the hundredth time, it is worth your while to check out one of Glacier National Park's visitor centers. You'll find interesting exhibits and a variety of educational programs for the whole family. Ask for a copy of the "Glacier Explorer," which lists descriptions, dates, times, and locations of special activities throughout the park. Also, park rangers are stationed at all visitor centers to answer questions and provide information. more info

Glacier National Park Headquarters: Located just before the entrance station at West Glacier, the park's main offices are housed here. Open year-round, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. For more information, call (406) 888-5441.

Apgar Visitor Center: Located near the foot of Lake McDonald on the west side of the park. You'll find exhibits on Glacier's plants and animals. There is also an educational cabin designed especially for kids. Open daily from late April through October and on winter weekends. Weekdays during winter, you can stop by the park headquarters.

Logan Pass Visitor Center: Located at the top of Logan Pass on Going-to-the-Sun Road, you'll find an excellent exhibit of Glacier's alpine life zones that exist above treeline. The Logan Pass Visitor Center also provides shelter from the wind as well as huge windows from which to enjoy the scenery. Open from mid-June through September.

St. Mary Visitor Center: Located at the foot of St. Mary Lake, this is the park's main visitor center. You'll find exhibits on geology and Glacier's diverse flora and fauna. An introductory slide show is also shown throughout the day. Open from late May through September.

For the kids: Your kids will enjoy being enrolled in the Junior Ranger program. Any child age 6 to 12 can pick up the Junior Ranger newspaper at any of the visitor centers. After completing five of the seven activities listed and returning the completed form, your child will earn a badge and become a Junior Ranger.
