St Mary Lake
The eastern end of the Going-to-the-Sun Road runs along the northern side of St. Mary Lake. From the lake you'll be rewarded with spectacular mountain views in every direction. The native tribes of the area referred to St. Mary Lake as the "Walled in Lake." Don't plan on merely driving pass the lake; there is a myriad of recreational activities to participate in. more info
Boating
Boating is a popular pastime on St. Mary Lake. The lake is equipped with a boat ramp so it is not necessary to hand carry your vessel into the water. Motorboats and motor vessels are allowed on St. Mary Lake.
All motorboats and sailboats 12 feet in length or longer must be registered and numbered according to the State of Montana Regulations.

Water Skiing
St. Mary Lake is one of two lakes in the park that allows water skiing. Water skiing is permitted only from sunrise to sunset. All water skiers must wear a personal floatation device. While water skiing, make sure you have two competent people in the boat at all times--one to operate the boat, and the other to observe the water skier being towed. Remember, towing is prohibited within 100 feet of any person swimming or diving.
Fishing
St. Mary Lake is open to lake trout (mackinaw) fishing only. The fishing season runs from April 1 through December 31. Although no license or permits are required to fish in Glacier National Park, all fisherman are required to stop by a visitors center or ranger station to get a copy of the park fishing regulations.
Before embarking on your water journey, keep in mind that the lake is extremely cold. Regardless of the time of year, you should be familiar with the dangers of hypothermia.
