Lake McDonald stretches 10 miles long and is just under 400 feet deep. The Continental Divide traces the mountain crests that are seen in the background. These mountains block heavy clouds that are saturated with rain. The annual rainfalls are heavy enough to provide the perfect living conditions for trees and plants found mainly on the Pacific Coast, such as red cedar and western hemlock.
Apgar is located at the southwestern tip of Lake McDonald. Here you will find amenities such as a visitor center, restaurants, gift shops, lodging, and a campground. This is a good place to stop and gather all the provisions for a backcountry trip. Apgar is also a gateway to the Going-to-the-Sun Road that follows the eastern shore of Lake McDonald.
Excellent fishing opportunities lure many people to Lake McDonald. However, you can only fish for lake trout (mackinaw). If you did not bring your fishing gear, there are several outfitters who will rent you some. There are also many guiding companies who are happy to show you the tricks to fishing for lake trout. If you are tired of standing on shore, you can also rent a boat from one of the several boat companies in the area.
If the idea of a boat ride sounds appealing to you but you don't want worry about rowing, sign up for a boat tour. You will be rewarded with spectacular views of Glacier from a comfy seat on a wooden boat. You can choose between a sunset cruise with cocktails, or one during the day. Some boat tours also offer a day hiking option.
