Bring the Whole Family to Iceberg Lake

Iceberg Lake it the perfect destination to bring your whole family. Views are rewarding and the trail isn't long. However, if you are looking for seclusion, you won't find it on this popular hike.

Named after the many icebergs that are found floating in its waters, Iceberg Lake sits high in a cirque, a steep wall found at the head of a glacial valley. Technically, Iceberg Lake is a tarn, or glacially carved lake that was sculpted long ago. The glacier that formed the lake no longer exists. The only remnants of the glacier that once dwelled in the basin are Iceberg Lake and a few snowfields at the head of the lake.

The hike to Iceberg Lake is 4.5 miles and is an easy day hike. Begin your hike at Iceberg-Ptarmigan trailhead in Many Glacier. If you do not want to hike alone, there are many hiking guides who are ready to lead the way.

On the hike you'll come across carpets of wildflowers in every color. Beargrass, a lily native to the Glacier area, is seen in abundance on the trail. Keep your eyes peeled for wildlife. Besides squirrels, you might get the chance to see mountain goats on the surrounding cliffs, and grizzly bears on the open slopes along the trail. Make sure you are familiar with bear signs and what to do if you see a bear.

Reaching the lake is a satisfying reward. Iceberg Lake is a brilliant turquoise color and bears many floating icebergs, even well into the summer. If you dare to take a swim, be aware that the water is extremely cold. Legend has it that the freezing waters of Iceberg Lake are home to Montana's fur-bearing trout.

Once at the lake, take your time to enjoy the scenery. Have a picnic or sit in the grass amongst the wildflowers. Sliding down the snowfields makes a nice after lunch activity.
