Before heading out on a hike, it is wise to stop by a ranger station or visitor's center to get maps and find out information about your trail. Rangers have knowledge of weather patterns and reported bear activity in the area. Rangers also know if bridges are washed out, or if there is a lot of snow left on the trails. Most trails at higher elevations are not free of snow until mid-June. If you are planning a multi-day backpacking and camping trip, you must stop at a ranger station or visitor's center to obtain a back country permit.

Your safety in the backcountry is ultimately your responsibility. In order to ensure a safe and comfortable trip, be prepared for the unexpected and adhere to all back country rules of etiquette. The weather in Glacier can change suddenly and dramatically. One minute it could seem as if you are hiking in the desert of Arizona, the next minute it could be snowing or raining. Bring layers of clothing suitable for all conditions. Bring plenty of food and water, more than you'll think you'll need. Pay attention to signs and rangers' warning of bear activity, and do not approach wildlife. Packing along bear spray is not a bad idea. If you are backpacking, hang all food in bear bags away from camp. Whenever you are active in the back country, remember to pack out what you packed in. Leave no trace.

Some popular hikes include:

  • Apgar Lookout Trail: a short yet moderately difficult trail that leads to views of Lake McDonald.
  • Avalanche Lake: a moderate 2-mile trail that takes you through forests until you reach a beautiful alpine lake.
  • Highline Trail: a long but not to strenuous trail that takes you almost 20 miles along the Continental Divide, revealing breathtaking scenery the entire way.
  • Hidden Lake and Hidden Lake Overlook: a moderately easy 6 mile hike that takes you up Hidden Lake Pass, yielding spectacular views of Mt. Reynolds, Bearhat Mountain, and Hidden Lake.
