Weather / Climate

The weather in Glacier National Park is largely dependent on the terrain and the time of day. It is wise to be prepared for sudden and unexpected changes in the weather.

Summer

Because of the cold winter months, the majority of visitors to Glacier National Park come during the months of June, July, August and September even though the park is open year-round. Another incentive to visit during the summer is the fact that all park facilities are open.

During the summer, the daytime temperatures in the floor of the valleys can rise above 90°F, while in areas higher up above the tree line, the temperature may be 10 to 15 degrees lower. During the night, the temperatures can drop to nearly 20°F and you should be prepared for snow at anytime. Snowstorms are common over Logan Pass in late August.

Strong winds generally occur on the east side of the Park, while the Park’s western valleys receive the most rainfall. Two to three inches of rain can fall each month during the summer.

Even though it may be summer, you will need to be prepared for a wide variety of weather. It is essential to dress in layers as the temperature fluctuates drastically throughout the day and night. In addition, always be prepared for rain.

Fall, Winter, Spring

Despite the fact that access to many parts of the Park are limited during the winter months and even many of the interior facilities of the Park are closed, more and more “off season” visitors are coming during the months of December through April. They are attracted by the fact that Glacier National Park is less crowded and there is more opportunity to enjoy the wildlife. Surrounding communities provide complete services year-round.
