Bowman Lake
Exploring Bowman Lake
Bowman Lake, located in the northwest corner of Glacier National Park, is an excellent place to bring the whole family. The lake provides an abundance of recreational activities from fishing to hiking to camping. Whether you decide to tie some flies or pitch a tent, you will be surrounded by breathtaking mountain views.
Fishing
Bowman Lake is filled with kokanee and cutthroat trout. The best time to catch these fish is just after the ice melts in the spring, and in the fall. Many anglers find success by fishing from a boat on Bowman Lake. If you are bringing your own boat, there is a boat ramp located just beyond the campground. Motorized vessels are allowed on the lake, but are limited to 10 horsepower or less. All kayaks and canoes are welcome.
Hiking
There are many hiking trails around Bowman Lake. Trails vary in length, difficulty, and terrain. Be prepared to walk through dense forests and wet, boggy spots. Some hikes gain over 1,000 feet in elevation, while others trace the perimeter of the lake. There are also trail loops which bring you to neighboring Lower Quartz and Quartz Lakes.
While hiking, keep in mind that the Bowman Lake area is prime grizzly bear territory. Carry bear spray and dispose of trash and food properly.
Camping
Bowman Lake campground is located in the North Fork area of Glacier National Park approximately 32.5 miles from the west entrance, and 30 miles from the Canadian border. The drive to Bowman Lake is a very slow and bumpy ride on dirt roads, and passes through the tiny community of Polebridge and sections of the park that notably burned in 1988.
Mountains tower over pristine Bowman Lake. The campground is located close to the shore and camp sites are within trees for shade and some privacy. Tent campers looking for peace and quiet will enjoy Bowman Lake for it's serenity and remote location. Be sure to pack bug repellent or headnets though, as mosquitoes often take residence at Bowman Lake. Potable water is available through a hand pump in the campground, and there are pit toilets nearby.
Limited amenities can be found in Polebridge.
RVs and truck and trailer combinations are not recommended at Bowman Lake due to the nature of the long, narrow, and windy dirt road to the campground.
Sites are on a first-come, first-serve basis.
