Flathead Lake State Park is divided into six sections scattered around the lake's waterfront. Five of the six mini parks offer camping, bathroom facilities, picnic tables and grills, and wonderful opportunities for hiking and viewing wildlife. These parks operate between the beginning of May through the end of September.

Finley Point is a popular campground for RVs and boat enthusiasts. Surrounded by a cherry tree orchard, Yellow Bay is wonderfully shaded. Wayfarer sits on the lake's northeast shore just minutes from the small resort town of Bigfork. This park is a great place for camping, picnics, swimming, and enjoying nature walks and wildflowers. West Shore gets credit for having the best views. It is also the most secluded. Big Arm sits along the west side of the lake. It is the closest distance from Wildhorse Island, a great park for day trips as camping is prohibited.

In the summer months you can enjoy just about any activity you can think of. Enjoy boating, beaching, camping, fishing, hiking, kayaking, lake fishing, photography, swimming, water skiing, and wildlife viewing. All types of boats are allowed on Flathead Lake and the busy season finds the lake full of waterskiing, fishing, sailing, kayaking, canoeing, and swimming. There are a handful of boat launches and marinas, as well as places to rent boats or hire guides. It is common to see people fishing for world class cutthroat, lake and rainbow trout, and whitefish. Mackinaw Alley, Woods Bay, and Wildhorse Island are great fishing spots along the lake. Hiking is a great way to spend your days near Flathead Lake. As Wild Horse Island State Park is only open to public during the day it is also home to some of the most fantastic trails and scenery. You can access this island by private boat or boat tours.

Highway US 93 borders Flathead Lake along the western shore and Montana State Highway 35 runs along the eastern edge. Airports are located in Kalispell, just outside of Glacier National Park, and in Missoula. Amtrak also runs through the area making stops at Whitefish and West Glacier.
