Flathead Lake in northern Montana is known for its crystal clear waters, and more importantly its legend of a lake monster that swims in the depths of the lake. The lake is 28 miles long by 15 miles wide, more than enough room to share its beautiful waters with other visitors. Summer and fall are the best times to visit Flathead Lake in sunny warm weather but they also happen to be the busiest times. more info

Flathead Lake welcomes all kinds of water sports and crafts and hiking trails encircle the lake on all sides. A handful of boat launches and marinas line the waters edge. Boat tours are offered as well as boat, canoe, kayak, hydro-bike, and sailboat rentals. The lake is busy throughout the summer with boaters and fishing enthusiasts, and even windsurfers. Fishing for Mackinaw, Lake Trout, salmon, perch, pike, bass and whitefish is common on the lake and in its surrounding rivers. Flathead Lake is a great place to boat, sail, canoe, sea kayak, or fish.

Sea kayakers are typically advised to paddle close to shore in order to avoid larger vessels and wakes. If you do decide to rent a kayak or bring your own, make sure to visit the Painted Rock Petroglyphs. These scenic wonders are only viewable by boat.

Swimming is possible anywhere on Flathead Lake but there are some key spots that have great beaches and swimmer friendly waters. Try Bigfork's Wayfarers State Park and Polson's Boettcher Park. Enjoy the clear cold water and pebbly bottoms along these beaches.
