The lake invites all types of water sports and many boat launches and marinas offer rentals or boat tours. On the southwest end of Flathead Lake make your way across to Wildhorse Island. This island is restricted to day use only but is a great destination for a day hike, beach lounging, or viewing the island's many bighorn sheep. Its name is derived from the Salish and Kootenai Native Americans. They hid horses on the island from Blackfeet tribes who had threatened to steal them.
There are a handful of places near Flathead Lake that should not be missed. Ninepipe National Wildlife Refuge is a wonderful place to view wildlife and Montana's natural beauty. Experience glacial potholes and hundreds of species of birds in this fantastic refuge. Jewel Basin Hiking area is an area designated for hiking only. This is a great place to get away from the crowds and to enjoy a peaceful hike without having to share trails with bikes, horses, or ATVs. It has access to 35 miles of trail and 25 lakes.
It's difficult to visit Flathead Lake and not take some time to visit Glacier National Park. This National Park is home to breathtaking views of peaks, valleys and ridges, all originally formed by glaciers. Enjoy numerous wildlife sightings of creatures like deer, elk, moose, mountain goats, bighorn sheep, wolves, and grizzly and black bears. There are three visitor centers in Glacier. Apgar, Logan Pass and St. Mary's visitor centers are all great places to visit for trail and permit information as well as wonderful suggestions on day or multi-day hikes or must-dos.
You can visit Flathead Lake via plane, train, or automobile. Bigfork, Rollins, Polson, and Big Arm are little resort towns that surround the lake. You will have no trouble finding amenities like car rentals, restaurants, and many places to stay or camp.
