Whitefish Lake in northwestern Montana is a popular fly fishing destination. Located on the outskirts of the town of Whitefish, this large lake measures a mile wide and seven miles long. Bearing healthy populations of lake trout and mountain whitefish, you'll definitely hook a few in Whitefish Lake.

Not only are there a plethora of fish in Whitefish Lake, the fish here are large. It is not uncommon to pull up a twenty pounder. In addition to the lake trout and whitefish, you'll find bull trout, rainbow trout, northern pike, coho salmon, cutthroat trout, kokanee westslope cutthroat trout, and arctic grayling.

The best way to catch the lake trout is by boat. It is possible to catch fish from shore, however the lake is large and your chances improve if you explore its waters. Most of the lake fish live in deep waters. Tolling using spinning gear is a method used by many anglers who frequent the area. At the northern end of the lake you'll find small inlets which provide good place to cast.

Whitefish Lake makes an excellent place for ice fishing in the winter. Ice fishing season begins in late December. Before you embark on your ice fishing adventure, make sure you have the proper knowledge, experience, gear, and equipment as ice fishing can be dangerous.

Whitefish Lake is surrounded by homes and condominiums so it is no surprise that the lake receives heavy traffic from anglers, water skiers, and boaters. Despite its popularity, Whitefish Lake provides spectacular scenery. It is located at the base of Big Mountain which serves as a ski resort in the winter.

To get to the boat ramp, go to City Beach which is located near downtown Whitefish. To access lesser developed portions of the lake, you can walk along the train tracks on the western side.
