Big Mountain Furniture Race
Since the mid 1960's, employees, local residents, and just about anyone who happens to be in Whitefish Montana at the time, has celebrated the end of the winter ski season at Big Mountain Resort by participating in the annual furniture race. It started as a joke when someone nailed some wooden skis on to a piece of furniture and then rode the furniture down a portion of the mountain, but the idea caught on. The Furniture Race has even gained national and international attention. more info
Dragging the "furniture-ski" up the hill to begin the race would be very difficult so the Resort uses a snow cat to get the various "furniture-skis" to the starting point. Participants are judged on their "furniture-ski" design, costumes, technique and finesse as they race down a beginner's slope and attempt to stop as close as possible to a target at the end of the run. Similar to alpine racing, you can be disqualified if you leave the "course", miss a "gate" or knock down part of the fence or a spectator!
All participants must be registered and must present their "furniture" for inspection prior to the actual race. If you think that you have perfected "couch sitting" or can describe yourself as the ultimate "couch potato", this may be the type of skiing just for you.
