What to Bring to Glacier National Park, Packing List

What to Bring

Glacier National Park in northern Montana is a scenic wilderness filled with wonderful sights, sounds and extraordinary adventure. Many travelers coming to Glacier intend to spend their time in the backcountry wilderness. Others may just be interested in a day hike or a driving tour. Whatever your plans, whenever you intend to visit, part of the preparation for your trip includes determining what to bring.

Glacier National Park is located in the northern portion of the United States and is a mountain environment. Therefore, regardless of the season, it is essential to plan to dress accordingly. Plan to bring the appropriate clothing and outdoor gear that will make your trip to Glacier comfortable and safe.

It never gets very warm here – highs in the summer are around 70 degrees with the nighttime temperatures dropping into the upper 30s or low 40s. Summer is the time for hiking and most days you can enjoy your adventure in a shirt and shorts and of course, good hiking shoes/boots. Always be prepared for sudden rain showers and be sure to have warm clothes with you – even if it was 80 degrees when you started. Rain gear is a must.

Other items to put in your suitcase include a wool or fleece sweater, a cap/hat, and gloves. Bring an extra pair of comfortable shoes to wear in the evenings. Tuck in several pairs of long pants, hiking shorts, long-sleeved shirts and T-shirts, underwear, sleepwear. And don't forget a bathing suit for a dip in an alpine lake or the hot tub at your hotel. Sun protection is vital at these high elevations so don't forget your sunhat, sunglasses and sunscreen.

No vacation is complete without pictures to take back home, so bring along your camera or camcorder. Other fun things to bring with you include lightweight binoculars, a journal, a relaxing book, and field guides to western wild flowers, mammals and birds.

And one essential to bring along for your trip to Glacier National Park - if you plan on crossing the Canadian Border in the Park - is your passport. It is necessary to have this document if you are traveling into Waterton and want to get back to the US.
