Whitefish Lake
Whitefish Lake is one of the most popular lakes in the State of Montana. The Lake is located in the small resort community of Whitefish which makes the access to the lake good, with a public boat ramp located at the City Beach near the downtown area. If you don't have a boat, you will be happy to know that the shore fisherman can access much of the western side of the Lake, by using the railroad tracks for a trail. Watch out for trains! The trains still travel through this part of the State. There is also less development on the west side of the Lake which will provide more solitude for the solitary fisherman. more info
Whitefish Lake has quite a population of lake trout and sizable numbers of large mountain whitefish, with some bull trout, rainbow trout and northern pike. The Lake is also used as a vacation spot with the Lake itself being surrounded by summer homes and condominiums. You can enjoy pleasure boating, sailing and water-skiing on Whitefish Lake.
The Lake is beautiful because it lies at the base of Big Mountain. Big Mountain is the site of a ski and summer resort offering winter (skiing, snowboarding, tubing) and summer (mountain biking, hiking on the Danny On trail system) vacations. If you want to get away from the crowds that use the Lake, head down to the north end – which is further away from the public boat launch.
Located 1 mile west of Whitefish on U.S. 93, then 1 mile north, there is a small 10 acre Park located on the shore of Whitefish Lake. This small park provides a mature forest and a pleasant campground and beach. Along this shore as in the rest of Whitefish Lake, you can enjoy swimming and fishing. Children love the trains that rumble along the park's edge. Whitefish Lake State Park is the only Fish, Wildlife and Parks managed site on Whitefish Lake. Pets are required to be on leashes in the Park and nearly all facilities are handicapped accessible.
