The South Fork of the Flathead River feeds into the area and the dam retains the Hungry Horse Reservoir, which is a part of the upper Columbia River System. The Hungry Horse Reservoir is one of a very limited number of Bureau of Reclamation reservoirs that can boast of having a naturally reproducing trout population. The reservoir is considered to provide some of the best lake fishing in the State of Montana. The construction of the Dam, created an excellent cutthroat and bull trout fishery on the South Fork of the Flathead River.
The west side of Hungry Horse Reservoir Road begins at the dam site. Boating, camping, fishing and hiking can be enjoyed in this area. Hungry Horse is bordered by the spectacular Great Bear Wilderness areas to the south and the sparkling Flathead River on the north. In addition to enjoying the great fishing, there is abundant wildlife and scenic beauty. This makes the area an ideal base camp for hikers, fishermen, hunters, snowmobilers, and cross country skiers. Snowmobiling dominates the scene when the snow begins to fall. More than 200 miles of groomed trails and limitless play areas make Hungry Horse a snowmobiler's fantasy land. If you prefer the solitude of winter entertainment, the area around Hungry Horse and up into Glacier National Park provides cross-country ski trails and miles of skiing in the back country during the snowy months.
