Flathead River
One of the most popular destinations in Montana is the Flathead River. Portions of all three forks of the river are designated National Wild, Scenic and Recreational. There are dams located on the river, one at Hungry Horse and one just below Polson, but for the most part, the Flathead River remains wild and undeveloped. It provides a scenic, wild highway for fishing, floating, or just observing free-flowing waters.
If you're looking to catch a Cutthroat trout, whitefish, rainbow trout, bull trout, lake trout, or a northern pike, you could do just that on the Middle Fork of the Flathead. The South Fork of the Flathead offers one of the most unique and thrilling whitewater rafting trips that you may ever experience. Also in this area, you will find great trails for hiking and for just enjoying the wilderness area. The only manner of access allowed in this particular area is either by foot or by horse, so you will not run into any of today's modern machines in this country. You can find plenty of time for hiking, fishing, viewing wildlife or just watching the river go by.
