There are many opportunities for recreation in the Flathead National Forest. The Flathead National Forest is a 2.3 million acre mass of wilderness, which is located in the northwest corner of Montana. IT stretches along the west side of the Continental Divide, from Canada 120 miles south. It is bordered by Glacier National Park to the north and east, Lolo National Forest to the south, the Kootenai National Forest to the west, the Lewis and Clark National Forest to the east and a wee bit of it at the northern end borders Canada.
It has 34 developed campgrounds which are great for camping in the summer and skiing and snowshoeing in the winter. There is also lots of area for hiking and lakes for canoeing.
Because the area is located so far north, the nights can get cold, even in the midst of summer, so come prepared. Some of the higher mountain lakes don't even open up until June and you may, even in the middle of summer, still encounter snow on the way to the higher lakes.
The Flathead National Forest is home to the 15,000 acre Jewel Basin Hiking area. The Great Bear, Mission Mountain and a part of the Bob Marshall Wilderness Area are also contained within the Forest. Along the many trials, you can see several different types of songbirds, hawks, eagles, and owls. Smaller animals such as gophers, chipmunks, beaver, porcupine, woodchucks, rabbits, and squirrels also call the Forest their home. If you're looking for larger critters, keep you eyes open for bear, elk, moose, big horn sheep, mule and whitetail deer and the rocky mountain goat.
There are several great mountain bike trails just waiting to be ridden and if you are in the area in the winter, you can take advantage of the grooming ski touring trails. The whole family can find something to enjoy in the Flathead National Forest.
