Lake County

Lake County's name was inspired by the nearby Flathead Lake. Lake County is one of about 3,141 counties in the United States, with 1,493 square miles in land area and a population density of 18.7 per square mile.

Lake County experienced a substantial amount of growth over the last three decades of the twentieth century, when its population grew by about 83%. According to the US Census Bureau of 2001, Lake County is the ninth most populous county in the country, with approximately 26,100 residents.

Lake County is situated within the Flathead Reservation, which was first created by the Hell Gate Treaty of 1855. It is home to the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes.

In Lake County there are 10,192 households with 33% containing children under the age of 18 in residence. 54% are married couples living together, and 29% are non-families. 24.5% of the residences consist of individuals, and about 10% contain a person living alone who is 65 years of age or older.

The average household size is 2.54, and the average family size is 3.02. 28% of the population in the county is under the age of 18; 8% from 18 to 24; 24.5% from 25 to 44; 24% from 45 to 64; and 14.5% are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years.

For every 100 females there are 96 males. There are 93 males for every 100 females over the age of 18.

For a household in the county the median income is $28,740; the median income for a family is $34,033. Males have a median income of $27,009, while females make a median income of $19,162. The per capita income for the county is $15,173. 18.7% of the population and 14% of families are situated below the poverty line. For the whole population, 24% under 18 and 8% of people over the age of 65 live below the poverty line.

Lake County also has the Mission Valley and Mission Mountain Range, Flathead Lake, the National Bison Range, and the Bob Marshall Wilderness area. It's located near Glacier National Park.
