Geography

Flathead County Montana encompasses 5,098 square miles (or 2,702,080 acres) of varied terrain within northwest Montana. With a low density of population in the region, the air is clear and fresh, so you can enjoy the majestic mountains and crystal clear rivers surrounding. There are 158 square miles of water area and a number of national protected areas within the county, including parts of Glacier National Park, Flathead National Forest and Lolo National Forest. A part of Kootenai National Forest is also within Montana’s Flathead County and all of the Lost Trail National Wildlife Refuge.

Flathead County MT has a population of 88,473 as of mid-2008. The largest town within the county is Kalispell with around 21,000 residents. Some of the smaller towns only have 1,600 or less people living in them, like Bigfork.
