Economy
Unlike much of rural western America, Flathead Valley has a growing and diversifying economy. The biggest factor contributing to this growth is the excellent quality of life that the valley provides. People are drawn to Flathead Valley's clean air and water, friendly small-town environment, and Glacier National Park. However, some argue that because of its rapid growth, the very elements that lure people to Flathead Valley are in danger.
Evidence of Flathead Valley's economic growth comes in various forms. Over the past decade, the number of jobs have increased 50%, creating 15,000 new jobs. Most of these jobs are in high-quality employment such as health care, construction, manufacturing, and business services. Along with jobs, the population has also increased. Between 1990 and 2000 the population has increased 26%. During the past decade, 1,000 new businesses were created, illustrating a boom in entrepreneurial activity. Conversely, unemployment is at its lowest in three decades. Poverty is also declining as the per capita income has increased 13%.
When interviewed or surveyed, most new residents state that their reasons for relocating to Flathead Valley are: scenic beauty, access to outdoor recreation, clean environment, small-town atmosphere, and wildlife. Research has also shown that new technologies are allowing people to move their jobs to where they want to live.
Glacier National Park is a huge money maker for the valley. Not only do millions of visitors find their way to Glacier each year, there are over 200 businesses in Flathead Valley that bear an icon or logo depicting or mentioning the park. Studies have found that small communities that are gateways to national parks have a more diversified economy than an average small town. The diversity is due to the residents who live in the gateway communities.
The irony of the economic growth, is that the very factors that draw people to Flathead Valley are being threatened. Glacier National Park owes its pristine state to its isolation from development. Now that people have "discovered" Flathead Valley, the park and its natural resources are being increasingly affected by humans. Many returning visitors have noticed a decline in the natural beauty over the years.
The Flathead Valley is in an economic transition. In order to keep the natural ecosystems intact and in harmony with the rapid growth, new residents must take action to ensure the valley's success and survival.
